Portable Air Conditioners Versus Evaporative Coolers: Which is Right
for You?
Our customers often ask whether
these two types of cooling systems are similar, but they’re really
quite different. Both AC units and evaporative coolers (also known
as “swamp coolers”) lower ambient temperatures but they utilize very
different cooling methods.
|
 |
How Portable AC Units Work
Like traditional
central or window air conditioners, portable air
conditioners provide cooling by evaporating refrigerants
such as Freon. The mechanics of the Freon evaporation cycle
are the same in a refrigerator as in an air conditioner.
Warm, moist air from your house is removed and cycled back
in as cooler air. This cycle continues until your desired
temperature is reached. Because portable air conditioners
draw moisture out of the air, they’re great for humid
climates and also double as dehumidifiers. Best of all,
portable air conditioners have the added bonus of being
fully portable.
Unlike window or wall
air conditioners, portable ACs don’t require permanent
installation and can be moved from one area to the next with
relative ease. All that’s required is an opening to exhaust
out warm air, and this is usually accomplished through a
window or drop ceiling.
The last thing to
remember is that portable air conditioners work best in
closed environments where air is continuously circulated.

How Evaporative Coolers Work
Evaporative coolers use
the simple process of evaporation to provide cooling. Most
portable evaporative swamp coolers consist of a box-like
frame containing a walled-fan and water-soaked pads. The
swamp cooler's fan takes in hot air and sends it through the
water-cooled pads. As a result, this creates a cooling
effect.
Because swamp coolers
use evaporation to cool the air, they use as much as 75
percent less electricity than air conditioners and are
incredibly energy-efficient. The only downside to
evaporative coolers is that they can’t be used everywhere.
These air coolers work best in dry, arid climates with low
humidity.
Keep in mind that while
evaporative coolers supply fresh, moist air, they only
provide incremental cooling effects.

Remember:
Choose a
Portable Air Conditioner If:
-
You live in an apartment,
condominium, or any other type of dwelling that can’t
accommodate a standard central or window AC system due to
installation constraints.
-
You’re looking to add spot
or supplemental cooling for areas less than 500 square feet.
-
You’re able to vent the
unit out of a window, wall, or drop ceiling.
-
You’re cooling an enclosed
area with no open doors or windows.
Choose an
Evaporative Cooler If:
-
You live in a hot, dry
environment.
-
You need an affordable,
environmentally friendly cooling alternative to air
conditioning.
-
You like the idea of having
a constant supply of fresh, moist air.
-
You’re looking to cool open
areas such as workspaces, agricultural areas, or athletic
fields.

Portable air conditioners are small, mobile air conditioners
ideal for spot cooling or for use in areas that can't accommodate
window units such as apartment buildings. Unlike window ACs
which must be mounted through a wall, portable air conditioners
don't require permanent installation. Take a look at some of our
portable AC units here. |

Portable evaporative coolers (or swamp coolers) offer
cost-effective cooling that's more energy
efficient than air conditioners. In hot, dry climates, an
evaporative cooler can cool more efficiently than any other cooling
device. Although they work best in arid
climates, swamp coolers will operate in just about any hot location
where there's a fresh air
supply. |

Did you know that
electric
fans can do more than just cool? These simple,
energy-efficient appliances also provide additional ventilation,
prevent the inhalation of dangerous gases and fumes, and even help
with odor or moisture control. Choose from our large selection
of
portable electric fans,

Central heating systems usually aren't connected to
areas like garages or work spaces because they aren't insulated
enough to retain heat. An
electric garage heater is the ideal heating solution for
garages, shops, and industrial areas. They're also more convenient
and energy-efficient than propane gas heaters. |
